November 20, 2002.

We had our department-internal weekly meeting, and he apologized for not telling us sooner since he signed his notice yesterday evening. Yeah right. It’s not that he didn’t know for sure he’d be quitting - I mean, he’s starting his new job in January, the contract’s signed and everything. And here comes the funny part: he’s taking the rest of his days off soon, so that means he’ll be gone in two weeks.

We’re all pretty pissed, and we feel quite …betrayed. The problem’s not that he quit - it is how. We’re a damn team -well, we we’re-, and we used to be on very good terms. We’re still unsure what went wrong.

Anyways, this way or the other: the trust has been broken, and has been replaced by a feeling of betrayal. Might sound very poetic, but it ain’t - it’s just the way it is.

  • Nobody likes to find that someone they work well with is leaving, especially if your job is going well. I think it's like - 'why is he leaving?', makes you question whether there is reasons that you should consider it. I've been through a rough patch at my job where another project was going pear shaped, and several people jumped ship before it could really bottom out. Made everyone feel bad, even those who weren't directly on that project. :-/
  • With my transfer within the company, I did the right thing - didn't let anyone find out from other sources, I told them myself that I would be interested in doing something else, and I was applying for a new position. My team knew, and I had all the resources in place for the last project that I would be in charge of. Everything was covered, and my boss knew as well. No surprises. That's the way to handle it. It's just chickenshit to let everyone find out at the last moment, and even worse just dump all your responsibilities just because you found out you got the job.

But hey, I'm living by my own personal code here.
  • Did the same thing when I decided to quit my old job. They all knew, and they had enough time to get everything covered.
