We just got back from my parents’ place where we went for my mom’s birthday. Was good. A couple of news:

1. My baby sister and her long-time boyfriend are going to get married in mid-next year. I can’t believe it. I mean, really, she’s not even… umm… 25. :P

2. I’m allergic to cats now. Yeeehaw. My nose was tickling and running like mad the whole two days. Great. I wasn’t allergic to anything up until now. Well, one more thing Dana and I have in common now. g

3. The damn drive up there is way too long. Either that or I’m getting too old to sit in a car that long. ;)

I just got a mail, and I want to validate the sender’s claim, so I’m asking the male Americans among you for help. Here’s the claim:

Turns out the recent explosion in both bandwidth, MySQL usage and costs have been the result of some quite persistent referrer spamming attempts. Want to know what I mean? Okay. Works like this:

1. Fuckhead builds website.
2. Fuckhead notices his website is crap and worthless and doesn’t attract visitors.
3. Fuckhead writes an automated script which requests the frontpage of a rather lively site (for example this one) in order to show up as top referrer for this site, hoping that some poor soul will click the link to his site on the public “top referrers” page of said lively website.
4. Fuckhead starts script.
5. Script hits target site roughly 40000-50000 times a day, causing excessive bandwidth and server load.
6. Someone (i.e. me) has to pay extra fees for MySQL usage and bandwidth explosion.
7. I get pissed big time and effectively restrict Fuckhead’s site(s) from accessing anything on my server, swearing to God to strangle Fuckhead with his own guts should I ever meet him.

Now, the really stupid part of Fuckhead’s idea is in #3 – because G-Blog.net doesn’t even have a “top referrers” page. How much of a moron do I have to be to not even check the target site before I invest work?

God, I hate those spamming bastards. Referrer spam is almost worse than email spam, really.

PS: Excuse my french.
PPS: On the upside I can say that I’m now a bit smarter since I know how to restrict site access both by checking for IP (range) and referrer.
