Twitter Twerp Scan update: Reputation #

May 01, 2008.

Another late night Twerp Scan coding session. I mean, why not? ;) So, what’s new today?

  • User reputation: You know the people you’re following, right? If you like what they do, give them a thumbs up or down rating. (No registration necessary. Just click.)
  • Some more pagination options: If you want, you can see all your contacts at once now.
  • The table columns can be re-ordered. Want the verdict right next to the name? Click the column header, hold the mouse button and drag it over.
  • More vertical space. It’s a wide table, after all.

For me, the reputation is a big one. Up until now, there was no way (that I know of) that allowed for community-driven behaviour rating. Here’s the idea: we can block the “bad guys” all we want, but if I’d block @buyinsurancelol, you wouldn’t know. But now I can give the guy a “thumbs down” in Twerp Scan, and if you have him in your contact list, you will see he’s got a thumbs down.

On the other hand, if a 100 people think @MyBlogLog is an okay guy (he is) and give his Twerp Scan contact list entry a “thumbs up”, you’ll see it in your contact list (on Twerp Scan)—which might convince you his 1:7 ratio and his following 15k other people are okay.

Well, at least that’s the idea. It’s a community-driven experiment. So consider playing around with it for the betterment of interwebs! Since it’s a pluggable system I think there are other possibilities… For example a Greasemonkey script that adds the reputation thumbs to the actual Twitter pages etc. Let’s brainstorm. The comments are open.

Well, that’s it. Head on over to Twerp Scan to check out the new features. And please let me know what you think, either via Twitter or the comments below.

(By the way, big thanks to the YUI team, the Yahoo! Pipes and JS-Kit for making this endeavour so simple. Appreciate it! Now if there only was something so simple to make the page less fugly…)

  • Carlo,

Great work so far on the tool... Looking good.
    Brilliant idea..

What's the best method to contact you if we have suggestions or bug improvements?
(Didn't want to Twit you them or leave them in comments in open meat space without asking you first).

    Regards
  • Just putting them in the comments is fine for the moment, thanks! :)

Hi Carlo. Finally had time to try the newly enhanced Twerpscan. 8-)

I love the paging feature. Also, my machine used to hang while the followers were being analyzed, but it works just fine now! *thumbs up*

I find the Reputation score (and the related greasemonkey script) interesting. Do you intend to publish a Top list on your site somewhere?

The only unexpected behavior I encountered is from the little pop-up that appears after I click a 'thumbs up' symbol (the one that confirms my vote was cast and also lets me see "Top" "Hot" and "Info"). I can't seem to find a way to close it or move it.

Each time I click on a 'thumbs up' a new pop up appears and obstructs more of the page. It also doesn't disappear when I click through to the next page in my list.

Thankfully, the columns can be moved around so I just kept moving the "reputation" column around to parts of the page that weren't obstructed by the pop-ups. 8-)

I use Firefox 2.0.0.14 on WinXP, fwiw

Finally, I wonder if there's a way for you to indicate (perhaps in the verdict column?) that I'm not yet following someone back. I don't actually need a "Follow?" link (although that would be nice) since I can just click on the person's name and go to their profile page and follow them there.

P.S. With the reputation score and the possibility of finding interesting people to follow back, it feels like TwerpScan is evolving into something more than just finding out who you should block. I like that. 8-)
  • Re paging: yes, I've heard a couple of similar reports by now. w00!

Re top list: no, to avoid "rep whoring".

Re popup/panel/tooltip: If you move your mouse away from it, it'll usually close after a five seconds or so. If it doesn't, it's a bug (not my code, by the way, as I use js-kit.com for that).

Re "following back": I believe that'd require Twerp Scan to scan all the followers of each contact, too, which sounds a bit too much for me at the moment. I have to think about it some more.

    Re praise: thanks. :)

And now I am going to continue preparing for my one-week offline vacation at the sea. Laters!
